About Debra Thurtell

since When people ask me who I am I begin by telling them, unashamedly, that I am a child of God. It is important for me to express my faith because who I am is based on Who I believe in and What I believe. It is with strong faith and a love for all that I desire to conduct myself in my life and in my business.

I am blessed to be happily secure in my marriage, to have raised 2 wonderful children who are confidently courageous to have spread their wings and set up home in another country with their spouses and children. Absolutely delighted to be called “granny” – what a privilege and honour it is to see our children’s children!

How I got to do what I love doing

My working career began while studying and working as a Radiographer / Sonographer. Life happens and sometimes we find ourselves following different paths. Being a learner by heart I am willing to learn whatever I need to learn to make life a success, living by my mottos:

“Nothing is ever lost in life but so much can be gained through the learning.”

“A person is never too old to learn!”

My passion for creating dynamic teams and the development of people began within my own developing role within the company where I worked for seventeen years. During this time, I learned about the business world of finance, operations and administration, the importance of growing and developing people within the company (an organization’s greatest asset), thinking creatively, co-creating a great culture and maintaining the culture during inevitable changes of the exciting world of startups! I learned to work in an Agile environment and to introduce Agile ways of working to most functions within an organization – agility in business.

It was in 2006, that I had the opportunity of being introduced to the wonderful world of coaching. It opened my eyes to all the benefits coaching can bring to a person’s professional and personal life. My own personal career development and growth, while juggling being a wife and mother, could not have been possible without the support of the company’s coach.

Coaching journey

Being passionate about the coaching profession I started my coach training journey in 2007 with The Coaching Centre. In 2010 I was given the opportunity to train as a Solution-Focused Brief Therapy Coach with Dr Svea van der Hoorn. SFBT is an evidence-based pragmatic approach that was developed by Insoo Kim Berg and her partner Steve de Shazar in the late 1970’s through to 2007. I achieved my International Solution-Focused Brief Professional Certification (ACTP) through Solution Surfers in 2016.

In 2017 I made the decision to start my own consulting and coaching business,  providing Solution-Focused coaching in the Business world of Team Dynamics and also to Private individuals. It is with an Agile and Solution-Focused mindset that I approach my work within organizations with the added bonus of the skills and knowledge I have acquired.  I pride myself on having been a generalist in the company where I worked. I was fortunate to have gained valuable knowledge through attending courses, my network connections and those who are specialists in their field of expertise. These skills and knowledge have added value to my Coaching services that I offer.

I obtained my ICF Professional Coach certification (PCC) in 2019. I have attended various Coaching Courses since 2020 having received a Master Coaching, Mentor Coaching, Coaching Supervision and Team Coaching certification from Solutions Academy. I renewed my ICF PCC certification in 2022. I was awarded my EMCC Global Individual Accreditation (EIA) and Professional Designation at Senior Practitioner level in 2022.
